与Thomas J. Silhavy教授座谈

        2014年五月四日,学堂班部分学生在五一假期的最后一天与远道而来的普林斯顿分子生物学系教授Thomas J. Silhavy座谈。座谈会在清华学堂102教室举行,刘栋老师主持了座谈会。

(刘栋老师向大家介绍Silhavy教授

        Silhavy教授首先向同学们介绍了自己的人生经历。他在大学本科期间选择了药学专业,但他在学习过程中发现自己对基础研究更感兴趣,所以本科毕业后申请了哈佛大学的生物化学专业。他之后一直钻研自己所喜欢的问题,比如膜蛋白,在生化领域作出了很多杰出的贡献,并在2005年被选为美国科学院院士。在美国当年近七十的大科学家很是幽默风趣,座谈现场的氛围非常轻松愉快。Silhavy除了是一名科学家,还是一位杰出的教育家,他的学生有两个也已经成为了美国科学院院士。

        同学们踊跃地向Silhavy教授提了许多学业和科研上的问题,他通过对自己的求学经历的讲述来鼓励同学们以后申请PHD项目时一定要听从自己的兴趣,这样才能激发自己的灵感,保持源源不断的动力。
